To report the epidemiology and outcome of Staphylococcal Meningitis (SM) in children in a developing country. Prospective observational study in a Tertiary Care Centre in a developing country between January 2003 and December 2004. Children with SM were included in the study. A detailed history and examination including neurological examination was carried out. CSF was collected for routine laboratory investigation and microbiological work up. Treatment was according to prevailing management protocol. Of the 22 children with SM, male to female ratio was 1.7:1. Mean age was 22 months. Fever was the most common presenting feature followed by headache, vomiting, altered sensorium and convulsion. Incidence of SM was highest in the first year of life. Staphylococcus aureus was the commonest organism isolated, followed by streptococci, Haemophilus influenzae and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Empiric treatment with penicillin G and aminoglycoside was adequate in most of the cases. The overall mortality was 30% with higher mortality in gram negative cases. SM remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in children in developing countries. More than 90% of the cases presented with a single complaint, which may suggest undiagnosed subclinical cases. Establishing reliable microbiological methods for diagnosis of SM in developing countries is an important area for future research. There are many instances where it is desirable to inject an actuating fluid, such as steam or hot water, into a thermal field for the purpose of varying the temperature of the thermal field or to achieve a desired reaction. Examples of these include steam injection for controlled carbonation, regeneration of a desiccant, steam-assisted oil recovery, and carbon dioxide (CO.sub.2) flooding, for the recovery of oil from subterranean oil bearing formations. One method of producing oil from an oil bearing formation is to inject steam into the formation in a process referred to as steam-assisted oil recovery (SAOR). Steam-assisted oil recovery is particularly attractive for a number of reasons. One advantage of SAOR over other methods of secondary recovery is that it can be implemented relatively inexpensively. Also, steam injection produces a higher ratio of oil to water in the formation than other secondary methods, such as water-drive or gas-drive. One method of implementing SAOR
